Described by AN Interior as “a strange brew of Grace Jones, David Lynch, and Andrea Branzi” Hammy Wammy explores Deco style from the 1930s as interpreted in the 1980s, all through a DIY approach that reinforces the “seriously fun” qualities of postmodern architecture.

Hammy Wammy has assembled a cohort of like-minded artists, musicians, and performers, serving as a kind of design incubator for the underground arts scene in Chicago.

The bathroom is styled with off-the-shelf grid sections intended for tool walls, prints from WET magazine, and locally thrifted 1990s mirrors.

The interior of Hammy Wammy is intended to be flexible and reconfigurable, but never neutral. In the words of Hammy Wammy curator and artistic director Meg Gustafson: “Good taste is boring.”

In 1985, Art Deco was a 50-year old style. In 2025, we are approaching an equivalent distance from the 1980s, and interpretation and preservation of styles from 80s Deco to Vaporwave are in turn re-entering the mainstream. We’re here for it!
